Romanian road workers hope that this year will be the first year in the history of the Transfagarasan that the road will open to traffic in May.
In the 50 years since the opening of DN 7C Transfagarasan, the high altitude sector of the road has never been opened earlier than late June or early July. This year, due to global warming, this is very likely to happen during May.
Obviously, it also depends on the weather conditions. As for now, snow removal work has already started, on both sides of the mountain, 3-4 weeks earlier than usual.
„The good news is that we are getting less snow this year than in other years. We will be able to open the road maybe even during May (of course, this is about the section Piscu Negru-Balea Cascade, closed during the cold season – editor’s note)”, Brașov District Road Company (DRDP Brașov) informed.
The most iconic mountain road in the world, DN 7C Transfagarasan, linking the Romanian ancient regions of Transylvania and Wallachia, will celebrate in September 2024 its 50-th anniversary.
The work begun at the very end of 1969, from both southern and northern sides of the planned road. Several thousand workers were mobilized. The Transfagarasan was ready and opened to road traffic in September 20-th 1974.
